Why did you become an educator?
I became an educator to make a difference. I love to see students learn, grow, and develop into young adults. There are so many students that do not get an equitable learning experience due to their background. A lot of the students I teach are the first generation to make it to college. Knowing that I had a hand in helping them make that dream come true is satisfying.
I once had a student in 7th grade tell me he hated school, he wasn’t going to pass 7th grade, and that he knew he wouldn’t make it to high school. That student passed 7th grade that year and was a part of our school’s second graduating class of 2019. Being able to see students overcome their struggles through learning experiences is life-changing. Not only is that student’s life-changing, but mine as well, personally and professionally.

I love the culture the students and teachers have formed over the years.
Why is it important that lower-income children can attend schools of choice?
It is important that lower-income children can attend schools of choice so that they are not forced to the school in their neighborhood. Most schools in lower-income neighborhoods struggle with behaviors, which make the learning process difficult.
