AFC Announces National Director of Implementation

The American Federation for Children, the nation’s voice for educational choice, is thrilled to announce the promotion of Bruce Hermie, currently a Senior Fellow, to the position of National Director of Implementation.

The last four years have brought an explosive expansion of school choice across the country, an unprecedented change in the K-12 education landscape that brings hope to countless families – and underscores the work remaining ahead. We must ensure the right conditions for innovation and high-quality school growth, while increasing awareness and access for families most in need of education freedom.

Since our founding, AFC’s mission has been clear: to empower families, especially lower income families, with the freedom to choose the best K-12 education for their children. Over the years, we have worked hand-in-hand with families across the country to identify their school choice options, resulting in more than 1,000,000 students being enrolled in private school choice programs.

Bruce brings years of experience in the public policy arena at AFC as well as hands-on knowledge from prior roles as a private school principal, dean of students, and educator. In his new role, Bruce will oversee our expanded implementation work and newly launching Implementation Fund.

Statement from Tommy Schultz, CEO, American Federation for Children:

“We are changing American education for good, and the work continues far beyond the initial victories at ballot boxes and statehouses. At AFC, we continue to build a transformational operation that ensures every student can access an education that meets their needs. Millions of families are counting on us to be successful, and thanks to our talented and dedicated team, I know we will be.”

Bruce Hermie currently serves as senior fellow at AFC, overseeing the School Leaders Fellowship, which has connected with dozens of key educators and administrators across the country. He has built a national reputation as a trusted expert and top leader in this space, combining policy expertise with hands-on experience as a servant leader. In his new role, Bruce will serve as the central hub and organizer of implementation needs across the country, from policy advice to tangible support and connections.

AFC’s Implementation Fund will allow us to respond rapidly to dynamic and diverse needs across states with grant-based or direct support that ensures every child has a chance to learn.
