My child was lucky to be awarded the NC Opportunity Scholarship after two years at a charter school. My child hated school, hated anything to do with school. After one semester at Westchester Country Day School, a private school, she was reading road signs as we drove around town, sounding out any word she saw, and wanted to go to school. She is in her second year and we, nor, she never wants to go to any other school. My child is on level for her grade because of the NC Opportunity Scholarship!
All families deserve the right to give their child an education that will benefit them in their future and prepare them to be a thinking and participating US citizen. It’s time to face the facts, public schools, even magnet and charter schools are no longer providing quality education. Parents should be given the opportunity to seek out other resources for their children due to the failure of public school systems across the US! Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence: “…whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends [rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness], it is the Right of the People to alter of abolish it…”. The public school system is part of the government and its failure is impeding on the inalienable rights mentioned in the Declaration of Independence; therefore, it is our duty as US Citizens to “alter or abolish” it. School choice is altering the failing public school system in hopes that the alteration may, one day, strengthen it again!
