My daughter Byanca has down syndrome. She started attending school when she was nearly three years old. I was a little worried since she struggles to communicate, but the head start was good for her. However, in kindergarten we started to notice that she wasn’t learning.
Byanca lives to learn. When we stopped at the school to see how she was doing, we didn’t like how she was playing alone. In the classroom, she was just left running around on her own. We knew she deserved better.
That’s when a friend gave us the ESA flyer and we learned that we could enroll Byanca in a small private school that will help her learn and push her to be better. Now she is in a classroom where teachers know that Byanca is an intelligent girl and push her to succeed.
“As a father of four kids, I want options for my kids because each one learns differently”
As a father of four kids, I want options for my kids because each one learns differently. I want all families to have the same option as Byanca, to attend a school that sees past her condition, and helps her learn. Most importantly, she now plays with friends! I’ve seen how Byanca has grown into a happy and independent young lady. All kids should have this opportunity to be the best that they can be!
