I have fought the system over and over again for my children to be afforded the opportunity to receive a great education. I have 5 children and each one learns differently. I get that, but I felt like a failure as a mother always being placed in a situation not conducive to my children’s style of learning or energy.
However, that all turned around when my children received scholarships as part of the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program. At first, only one child was accepted and I was kind of upset. But I didn’t give up because I saw the confidence in my son and how the teachers were really helping him excel academically.
I kept applying every year until my daughter received her scholarship and then my other son. It is because of the Opportunity Scholarship Program that my children have gained confidence in their education, strength and encouragement to be leaders, and the skills to excel in the academics.
