I was born in Oklahoma, but both my parents were born in Mexico. My mom never finished high school and my three older sisters started college but none of them have finished. My dad has always told us that when you start something you need to finish it. My sisters tried, but they eventually gave up. Seeing that happen really made an impression on me and made me more focused on my education.
Watching the struggles my family has gone through taught me that all the motivation in the world sometimes can’t overcome the obstacles in front of you when you don’t have the right tools and training. I feel like I am getting both of those at Cristo Rey, and I am enormously grateful for it.
“I feel like I’ve really found my purpose here.”
Being part of Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program, my favorite part of Cristo Rey, has forced me out of my comfort zone. I’m an introvert, but now I can speak with older people with confidence. I just received the worker of the semester award!
When I graduate from college with my degree, I’ll be the first one to do so in my entire family. I’ll be setting an example for my younger sister and all my relatives. I wish everyone could have the advantages that I have had through the Equal Opportunity Scholarship program.
Cristo Rey OKC reminds us to focus on faith, service and purpose. I feel like I’ve really found my purpose here.
